Four Pillars of Healthy Living

If you’ve struggled with health issues, then now is the perfect time to learn effective strategies to improve your health. I believe in the following four pillars of healthy living. Check them out and improve your health now.

1. Healthy Eating

Not all calories are created equal when it comes to healthy eating. Junk food and fast food have empty calories. They contain highly processed ingredients and preservatives with most, if not all, of their nutritional value stripped away.  Food with empty calories doesn’t provide any real nutrition that your body needs to function, like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. On the other hand, minimally processed whole food has all of these and more. These are nutrient-dense calories. They help your natural body function and repair. So if you must focus on calories, cut out all empty calories. And eat all the nutrient-dense calories you want. Eat as many salads, vegetables, and fruit you want. If you cut out the empty calories, then your body will naturally tell you when it has had enough. Empty calories leave our bodies wanting more and we overeat.

2. Clean Environment

It is difficult to live a healthy life if the environment around you, inside and outside, is polluted. It can be polluted by trash, chemicals, noise, chaos, negative images, negative sounds, etc. We should recognize that pollution can affect our homes with clutter, loud music, negative TV programming, and harsh chemicals in cleaning products. Toxic chemicals in food, personal care products, and cleaning products are making us sick. So we improve our environment by making healthy choices about the products we buy and the places we go to. It is also important to reduce the amount of waste we create and to recycle when possible. While there is a lot of talk about “Climate Change”, if we just focus on make the environment healthy to live in, nature will do the rest.

3. Mindfulness Practice Daily

Have a daily mindfulness practice like Qigong, Tai Chi, or Yoga (there are many others). This can also include prayer, writing in a gratitude journal or simply taking a walk in the park and connecting with nature. A mindfulness practice gives you the tools for practicing conscious awareness or being in the present moment. They also teach you how to relax both your body and your mind. Yes, if you can’t relax or calm your mind, then it will be more difficult to relax your body. Thus, you can relieve stress with a daily mindfulness practice. You can learn about Qigong at http://www.InnerVitalityQigong.com.

4. Service to Others

I believe that we are here to help and support each other. Being of service to others not only helps them, but it also gives us a true sense of purpose. You can give your time in some community project or you can donate money to your favorite charity. I donate to the Red Cross and local food bank. In a modern world of plenty, there are over a billion people on this planet that live in poverty. We can make a difference if we all work together to end poverty.  You don’t have to be a millionaire to make a difference.

I hope that you will take action on one or more of these pillars to improve the quality of your life. You can only make a real difference in someone else’s life once you have made progress with your own life.
